County Mayo is one of the twenty-six counties of the Republic of Ireland and one of the thirty-two counties of Ireland. It is located in the province of Connacht. The county was named after the village of Mayo (from Irish: Maigh Eo meaning "plain of the yew trees"), which is now generally known as Mayo Abbey. The population of the county is 123,839 according to the 2006 census. The county's main towns are Castlebar and Ballina, respectively located in the centre and in the north east of the county.
